About GPS Air

The quality of the air we breathe matters, and we are always thinking about ways to improve it.

Our Mission

We address indoor air quality problems efficiently and affordably, keeping equipment and energy savings top of mind, allowing you to increase your clean air, not your budget.

Clean air shouldn’t be complicated. Yet buildings face a constant stream of contaminants from outdoor pollution, occupant activity, and building materials themselves.

GPS Air was founded in Savannah, Georgia in 2008 to address those contaminants directly. Now based in Charlotte, North Carolina, GPS Air technology transforms your spaces into resilient environments where people can breathe easier, regardless of air quality challenges inside and outside your walls.

The Problems We Were Built to Solve

The indoor air quality challenge has two dimensions that are rarely addressed together.

Contaminant Control

Reducing the pathogens, particles, VOCs, and odors that accumulate in occupied spaces and degrade the health and comfort of the people inside them

Building Efficiency

HVAC systems account for approximately 40% of a commercial building’s total energy consumption. Another 40% of that goes entirely to heating, cooling, and dehumidifying outside air.

The conventional response to poor air quality is to bring in more outside air, but that approach is costly and inefficient.

Our Solution

Our technology tackles both of these challenges directly. The smartIAQ® air cleaning platform combines closed-loop monitoring, filtration, and performance documentation. It delivers quiet, on-demand air cleaning as needed, actively monitoring and recognizing air quality patterns based on ASHRAE 62.1 standards. smartIAQ also gives engineers a practical way to achieve ventilation efficiency through the Indoor Air Quality Procedure (IAQP) and verify results with confidence.

Our Needlepoint Bipolar Ionization (NPBI®) technology treats air continuously throughout occupied spaces, reducing certain airborne viruses and bacteria, neutralizing odors, and improving the efficiency of HVAC coil surfaces that accumulate biological fouling over time.

Our solutions can cut outdoor air conditioning costs in half by reducing the volume of outside air a building needs to condition. The result is a reduction in total building energy use of more than 6-9% without compromising air quality.

How Our Technology Works

smartIAQ Air Cleaning Platform

The smartIAQ IAQP-enabling air cleaning platform is an autonomous air cleaner that combines integrated NPBI technology with particle and carbon molecular filtration, tested to ASHRAE 52.2 and 145.2 standards for single-pass removal of particles and gaseous contaminants. Real-time solid-state sensors monitor conditions continuously, adjusting cleaning output as contaminant levels rise and idling when they drop to conserve filter life.

The platform integrates with building management systems via BACnet or Modbus and generates continuous performance documentation. With that information, teams gain visibility into air quality performance as a routine part of building operations.

NPBI Technology

NPBI technology uses bundled carbon fiber emitters to generate a dense, ion-rich environment that’s distributed through a building’s existing ductwork. The ionization process adds or removes a single electron from a molecule without fragmenting it, which is known as soft ionization. The distinction matters because fragmentation, which occurs with high energy or hard ionization technologies, can produce harmful byproducts such as ozone. Soft ionization does not.

Once distributed, ions interact with the surface proteins of certain airborne viruses and bacteria, reducing their ability to infect. They also attach to airborne particles, which makes particles easier to capture through standard filtration. Odor-causing molecules are similarly reduced through ion interaction. The process happens continuously, throughout the occupied space, not just at the filter.

Clean Air Technology, Validated at Scale

GPS Air has completed more than 300,000 installations worldwide in K-12 schools, healthcare facilities, commercial offices, airports, hospitality venues, and places of worship.

Our technology is third-party tested and peer reviewed. GPS Air holds more than 30 patents and achieved ISO 9001:2015 certification in 2022, completing a successful three-year recertification in 2025.

GPS Air technology is designed and validated to ASHRAE 62.1, 90.1, 44, and 241 standards, including UL 2998 zero ozone emissions testing. Our ASHRAE-based savings calculator, the smartIAQ Project Builder, demonstrates IAQP compliance and quantifies energy savings using the same methodology that engineers use to specify mechanical systems. To ensure your installation is successful, our Application Engineering Team provides IAQ design support at the project level, from initial IAQP feasibility through final documentation.
